MBBR – moving bed bioreactor – application for MBBR wastewater treatment solutions
MBBR stands for Moving Bed Biofilm Reactor. With this process wastewater can be treated in a typical aerobic environments. The MBBR systems are the best water treatment solution for low to high-strength wastewater. The system of biological nitrogen removal (BNR) can enhance the methods of MBBR systems which increases the treatment capacity and improves the wastewater quality in a more compact footprint.
MBBR wastewater treatment technology includes the following operational advantages:
- Low operating costs
- Low Maintenance
- Capable of handling low to high strength wastewater based on the system application
- Capacity expansion is typically easy to facilitate
- Resilient to fluctuations in the inlet wastewater
- Potential for Dual treatment of BOD and Nitrogen removal
The Moving bed bioreactor (MBBR) system is typically used for either high load industrial applications as well as for simple to operate robust municipal facilities. The systems can consist of a single stage or two stage treatment process depending on the specific demands of the wastewater. The specific bacteria remain in the aeration chambers via the protected carriers, as the carriers are protected from leaving the MBBR aeration chambers by screens.
MBBR systems can be utilized and integrated for different applications based on the quality of wastewater to be discharged or reused and the associated wastewater regulations.
The capacities range from 1m3/day to 20,000 m3/day in both containerized modular units and stationary units based on the application.
MBBR applications include:
- Domestic wastewater (onsite/decentralized wastewater treatment)
- Industrial wastewater including:
(pulp/paper industry, mining industry, food and beverage, pharmaceutical)
